Veteran director Shyam Benegal, who gave many National Film Award-winning films like 'Ankur', 'Nishant' and 'Manthan' to Indian cinema, is no more. He was in a coma for two days and died on Monday evening. Shyam Benegal gave the industry not only memorable films but also many brilliant actors. This list also includes many big names like Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Amrish Puri, and Anant Nag.
Born on 14 December 1934, Shyam Sundar Benegal was from a middle-class family in Hyderabad. A camera that was given to his photographer father first inspired the twelve-year-old Shyam Benegal to take his first shots. The great actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt was his cousin.
Shyam Benegal came to Mumbai in 1959. Then, he started working as a copywriter in an advertising company. He got promoted and became the creative head here. In 1962, he made his first documentary film in the Gujarati language. From 1966 to 1973, Shyam Benegal taught at Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India. Before making his first feature film 'Ankur' in 1973, Shyam Benegal made several ad films for ad agencies.
